In this week’s post, I’m sharing tips to help you get more consistent letters in Procreate. I love whimsical & loopy lettering, but sometimes our letters need to be more uniform.
You may already know some of these, but trust me, watch the video and pay special attention to tip #5. This was a game changer for me. I even used this technique to create an entire hand lettered font last year. If you’d like to check it out, you can find it here: Nita Font
I hope you find these tips useful. Remember, you don’t have to use just one. I find that I use most of them all at once.
Tips for Getting More Consistent Letters in Procreate
- Turn on the drawing guide
You can use the built in drawing guide within the app to help you master straight lines and letter spacing.
- Use the quickline feature
I love this feature. Draw a line or shape & hold your pen in place for a few seconds. The app will show that a line or shape has been created. As long as you don’t lift your pen, you’ll be able to drag the shape to change the shape, size and direction. Pretty cool.
- Use premade practice sheets
I do love a good practice sheet. The magic really happens when you’ve practiced enough that you can do it on your own without following the premade letters or words. That’s when your own style will show through.
- Use lined paper
Any kind of lined paper will keep your letter placement and height on track.
- Use shapes as guides
This one is my favorite. When you have guides to follow for the shapes that make up your letters, your letters will be more consistent. Remember that nothing has to be perfect, but using guides will help with getting the look you’re going for.
- Practice, Practice, Practice
I can’t stress this enough. Unless you’re someone who this just comes to naturally (I’m jealous of you, by the way, lol), it’ll take a whole lot of practice. Trust me, it’s totally worth it.
We all start somewhere. Check out this post to see where I started: Lettering Then and Now. I believe that anyone can learn lettering if they’re willing to put in the time & effort.
