What I’ve learned over the past few months…
I will always love lettering on my iPad, but I made some surprising discoveries last year. I struggled with lettering using pens and paper for a long time because I didn’t know the correct pens or paper to use. That’s when I started lettering on my iPad & didn’t think much of pens and paper anymore. Until last year…
Two things happened last year that I consider to be major turning points in my lettering journey. Last year was hard (life stuff), which is why I haven’t posted in a while. I was looking for some help to get through it, and I discovered Bible Journaling. That’s when I went back to using my pens for writing in my journal. I found that I was writing every day in my journal and loving my pens more and more, and I also started using a Journaling Bible. I use watercolor and lettering in my Bible to create pretty pages & study my Bible.
The second major point is that I had the opportunity to teach in-person beginner lettering classes. I had already started creating the worksheets for an online beginner lettering class using the iPad, so I had most of the workbook already done for a brush lettering workshop. I thought it would be a good idea to get some in-person experience before I finished the online class, and I’m so glad I did! Since I was using my pens again, I was confident that I could teach others.
I’m still using my iPad for lettering to create the practice sheets for my Belle subscribers weekly emails, font design, and workbooks for my lettering workshops. I’m using my pens and watercolor for journaling. Which one do I prefer? Before last year, I would have told you that it was my iPad – no question about it. But now, I would have a hard time choosing a favorite. So my answer to the question is both! Why not? If you love both, use both.
Now that I look back, one of the turning points led to the other. You see, things change…people change…and that’s ok. I created this website and my You Tube channel with a very specific goal in mind – to help others practice lettering iPad Style. I will continue with that, but I’ll also include content on lettering and art using pens, markers, watercolor, and other creative projects. I’ll also share some of my Bible art, and hopefully some bullet journal ideas. I hope you stay on this journey with me. I’ve found so much joy in lettering and art, and I hope you can do the same.
Here are some of my favorites for lettering (I have others, but these are my favorites at the moment):
- iPad & Apple pencil
- Procreate app
- Journal or Journaling Bible
- Crayola markers – yep – that’s right. Broad tip, super tip & brush tip are my faves for beginners.
- Tombow fudenosuke – hard tip & soft tip. I use these every day.
- Pentel Sign Brush pen
- Sharpie pen
- Pentel Touch
- Tracing paper
- HP Premium 32 paper
I’m so excited for this year! I plan on designing more hand lettered fonts, teaching more in-person workshops & offering online workshops! Subscribe to my email list so you don’t miss anything!
